President John Mahama of Ghana has ordered the immediate recall of the country’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Ahmed, following allegations of irregularities during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
In a statement released Saturday in Accra, the Presidency said the decision was necessary because Ahmed, who reportedly contested in the primaries, is a serving public officer and must adhere to the government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.
The move aims to prevent any perception of impropriety or conflict of interest, as Ahmed’s retention in office had become untenable under the circumstances.
The decision follows claims of vote buying and voter inducement during the primaries. While similar allegations were made against other aspirants, the Presidency emphasized that decisive action was required given Ahmed’s diplomatic role.
President Mahama also acknowledged the NDC’s internal investigation into the alleged malpractice and directed the Minister for Foreign Affairs to implement all administrative and diplomatic measures necessary to effect the recall immediately.
