The has allegedly stopped the monthly salaries of some local government workers accused of maintaining ties with chairmen elected on the platform of the (APC).
Sources familiar with the development said the affected staff, who are members of the Concerned Local Government Employees Association, did not receive their February salaries.
A branch chairman of the association, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, confirmed the development, noting that the affected workers are chairmen of concerned local government staff across the 30 local government areas and the Ife East Area Office.
“Yes, I can confirm that my salary was blocked. I didn’t get my February salary. This affects all the chairmen of the concerned local government staff across the 30 local governments and the Ife East Area Office,” the source said.
The worker attributed the development to alleged interactions with council chairmen elected under the APC platform.
According to him, the state leadership of the (NULGE) had earlier directed local government staff not to engage with APC chairmen in the councils.
“They accused some of us of relating with the council chairmen elected on the APC platform. The NULGE state president, , had asked local government staff not to talk to the APC chairmen in the councils. So they said we were ‘romancing’ them,” he said.
Also confirming the situation, the Chairman of the Concerned Local Government Workers, , stated that some staff had not received salaries from the state government since October last year following their suspension.
“It’s true. Some have not even received salaries since October when they were suspended. The number has now increased in February,” Adekunle said.
He explained that their suspension was allegedly connected to their stance on the prolonged strike action in the local government system.
“We insisted that it is not recognised in labour law for a strike action to last for one year on the grounds of security concerns. Some of us were suspended for speaking out,” he added.
It would be recalled that Ogungbangbe had earlier stated that council workers were loyal to the state government and should not maintain official relations with APC chairmen in the councils.
Despite the ongoing political tension within the local government system in , the state government had continued to pay the salaries of local government workers since the crisis began in 2025, according to reports.
