The Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, Hon. Hassan Kamorudeen Okanlawon, on Monday, January 26, 2026, led a large-scale environmental sanitation exercise at the popular Alamisi (Thursday) Market in Ikirun, Osun State.
The initiative followed growing concerns over environmental challenges in the community caused by reckless refuse dumping amid allegations of the sale of a former dumpsite within the community.
Recall that the National Ikirun Progressives Union (NIPU), Northern States Chapter had demanded accountability over the alleged sale of the property, prompting clarification from the Chairman’s office on the matter.
In a statement released by the council, the cleanup which has been extended to Monday Market formed part of the local government’s ongoing environmental renewal programme aimed at promoting a clean, healthy and safe environment.
According to the statement, the Alamisi Market, one of the busiest commercial centres in Ifelodun Local Government, was prioritised due to its heavy human traffic and economic importance.
It added that Hon. Okanlawon personally supervised the exercise alongside officials of the Works and Environmental Services Department, members of the Local Government Executive Council, the Legislative Arm and other stakeholders.
Activities carried out included general cleaning of the market, evacuation of refuse, clearing of blocked drainages and sensitisation of traders on proper waste management practices.
Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman stressed that environmental sanitation must be sustained and embraced as a collective civic responsibility.
He noted that cleanliness is closely linked to public health, productivity and the overall quality of life of residents.
“Our administration is determined to take sanitation to every corner of Ifelodun Local Government. Markets, streets, motor parks and residential areas must be kept clean to prevent disease outbreaks and ensure a safe environment for all. The Monday Market is a major commercial hub and it must reflect cleanliness and orderliness,” Okanlawon said.
He also warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, urging traders and residents to make proper use of designated dumping points provided by the council.
According to him, the local government will continue to enforce environmental laws while supporting communities with necessary facilities for sustainable cleanliness.
The Chairman further called on community leaders, market associations and residents to cooperate with government efforts, stressing that a clean environment cannot be achieved by government alone without the active participation of the people.
Hon. Okanlawon reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining the sanitation drive across all wards in Ifelodun Local Government as part of broader efforts to promote public health, environmental safety and a more livable community for present and future generations.
