The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory Command, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, has called on stakeholders in the tourism sector to make security a top priority in order to drive growth and attract investment.
Speaking in Abuja at an event to commemorate this year’s World Tourism Day, themed “Tourism and Peace – Building Through Cultural Diplomacy”, Odumosu said sustainable tourism cannot thrive in an unsafe environment.
In a statement issued on Friday by the FCT Command spokesperson, Monica Ojobi, the commandant emphasised that improved safety measures at tourist destinations would encourage both local and international visitors, thereby stimulating economic activity.
He noted that tourism sites are considered critical national assets under the purview of the NSCDC, given their cultural and economic significance.
“We believe that there is no tourism without security. We are ready to collaborate with stakeholders to secure tourism sites across the city and ensure Abuja remains a safe destination for all,” Odumosu said.
The commandant urged operators in the sector not only to market their destinations globally but also to invest in security infrastructure capable of guaranteeing visitors’ safety.
He assured that security agencies are intensifying efforts to safeguard the FCT, including clearing criminal hideouts and protecting critical infrastructure.
Highlighting some of Nigeria’s key attractions such as Obudu Cattle Ranch, Kwa Falls, Yankari National Park, and Zuma Rock Odumosu stressed that, if properly developed and promoted, such sites have the potential to significantly boost Nigeria’s economy.
“Tourism has the capacity to bridge cultural divides, promote national values, and counter misinformation about Nigeria’s security situation. There is no country in the world without its security challenges. What matters is that we all play our part in reshaping the narrative,” he added.
World Tourism Day, celebrated globally on September 27, aims to raise awareness of the social, cultural, political, and economic value of tourism and its contribution to sustainable development.
