The ancient city of Ibadan on Friday witnessed history as a former Governor of Oyo State, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, was officially crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The coronation rites began at the Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba, where the new monarch received the symbolic Akoko leaf, signifying his acceptance into the revered throne. He was later formally crowned at the Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area, in line with Ibadan’s age-long tradition.
Governor Seyi Makinde is scheduled to present Oba Ladoja with the staff and instrument of office at a grand civic ceremony to be held at the historic Mapo Hall. The governor, who cut short his annual leave to grace the epochal event, has described the installation as a unifying moment for Ibadanland and Oyo State at large.
Oba Ladoja ascended the throne following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who joined his ancestors on Monday, July 7, 2025. His emergence, consistent with Ibadan’s unique rotational chieftaincy system, marks a continuation of a long line of monarchs celebrated for their deep cultural heritage and grassroots connection with the people.
Meanwhile, the coronation has sparked mixed reactions across the city. While jubilant residents thronged the streets in celebration, vendors seized the opportunity to defy security restrictions and cash in on the large crowd that gathered for the historic occasion. In his first royal pronouncement, Oba Ladoja called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider the long-standing agitation for the creation of an Ibadan State, stressing that such a development would further strengthen the city’s political and cultural identity.
The installation of Oba Ladoja not only rekindles Ibadan’s centuries-old tradition but also underscores the enduring relevance of monarchy in contemporary Yoruba society.
